Musicals are some of the most demanding productions for schools to put on. Not only must the actors remember their lines and deliver them … they have to sing and dance too.
But Norwood High School in Norwood, MA can pull it off and has been for many years.
They start with the auditions in May and then the rehearsals run all summer long. The kids take their vacations, work their summer jobs … (even the leads) and another actor just steps in and the rehearsals continue.
This September, the school is presenting West Side Story. We’ve all seen the show or the movie, or at least seen some of it. This is Romeo and Juliet set on the streets … the mean streets of New York. And it is one of the most passionate and gritty plays too.
But it’s also beautiful and delicate and intense. I just finished photographing a rehearsal and I can already tell that the audience is going to love it.
Where do I begin to explain a town parade? The way it brings people together, helps them slow down for a day and remember what is really important.
The Fourth of July parade in Norwood MA is an event. It’s a quiet event in some ways and so LOUD at the same time. The parade is led by fire trucks and other emergency vehicles from all the local towns. And these guys blow every horn that they have as they slowly … oh so slowly drive through town. The sound makes such a statement and the townspeople applaude.
(this guy is not a real fire man … HA!)
And the bands that march come from all over the US and Canada.
But it is the baseball teams … riding on the floats … waving at the crows that line the streets that make this parade so special. This is a town parade … we love our town parade.
Here’s a link to a slideshow of images I shot during the parade.
When you shoot as many images per week as I do, you can tend to see multiple things in them.
This single image is of The Colonial Boys, a fife and drum marching unit who because of their generosity to the community are one of the most respected groups of their kind. But as I was preparing this image I couldn’t help but think of a couple of funny captions for what “could” have been happening.
And in my own twisted way, I had to share them with you. One is blank … so what’s your funny caption?
