Choosing The Right Headshot for the Part

Leanne just landed a role in a new play and so she needed some new headshots for the lobby gallery at the theater.

Lobby gallery headshots aren’t “character” images such as those that might be used in promotion of the show, they are personality images that reflect the tone of the play. A comedic part in a play might call for a different headshot than a melodramatic/dark part. We still want to prepare the audience with a headshot that reflects a tone of the production they are about to see.

A big “cheesy grin” headshot for the actor who is portraying Javert in Les Misérables is a contradiction and will totally confuse the audience as they wait to enter the theater for an epic, depressing production.

Now back to Leanne, as you can see, she has tons of personality in her headshots. And with just a small change in her hairstyle and a bit of tilt of her head she has a completely different look. Both are welcoming, feminine and friendly … it’s a comedy! Nailed it!

What a pleasure it was for me to work with Leanne to create some great images for her latest production.

And when she gets the call for Les Misérables, we’ll rock some darker looks. I accept the challenge!

Headshots – Dan Busler Photography – Memorable Images of You

Love – and creating fun – flirty – memorable headshots takes time.

The misconception about headshots is that they are portraits. When they are really “headshots” and you are the product. Because after all – they’ve just seen 50 or 100 actors or models and You want them to remember you! Incredible – awesome – talented – handsome – beautiful – approachable – sexy – stunning – “the perfect redhead for the part” … You!

So here’s the story when you come in for your session – First of all, relax – this day is going to be a blast. We’ll begin with a discussion of what makes you so darned incredible and how your images will be used.

Then a review of the clothing you’ve brought and we’ll spend a few minutes getting you acclimated to the lights, camera and the simple posing direction I give to make your images even more memorable.

All the time focusing on expression and attitude and speaking with your eyes to the person who will be holding your headshot after you’ve left the audition/modeling call. The purpose of this is after all – to get you the gig!

The B Girls – Spelling Bee – Walpole Footlighters – Busler

These headshots are of three of the cast members of the Walpole Footlighters – Walpole, MA production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
I really love doing headshots .. I must admit. I think it has to do with focusing on the actor’s eyes.
After all, there is so much life in a person’s eyes .. it could the saddness, or the laughter, the experience or maybe something else, but I do know that the eys don’t lie.

Sofia – A little Jewel

I love to photograph kids with a attitude … OK, not really an attitude, but the ones that pose that way.

Kind of cocky … with just a touch of “I’ll kick your butt! ” as in this picture with her girlfriends

Every shot was fun and the session just flew by

It’s always fun to see this through the camera … her Mother would be mad and tell her to stop … me? I just press the shutter!

Cara Stanley – with the Family

I look for natural smiles when I shoot portraits …
I wait for them. With Cara I didn’t have to wait

Cause every shot was almost perfect and I don’t think that she was posing .

So I asked her to give me a serious smile … but her eyes just kept smiling

Cara with her Dad – Fintan Stanley at his home on Cape Cod

And two beautiful ladies – Cara with her Mother at sunset

It was a great day to shoot this beautiful family

MIT Resonance – a Cappella

Everyone knows that MIT is a “buttoned down” think tank for nerds … right? Well I beg to differ with that notion. The MIT Resonance a Capella group proves it… the kids from MIT can sing and dance ! Here’s a look at the group when they performed as one of the featured performers at Norwood High School’s A Capella Night.

The Amherst Bluestockings

The girls from Amherst College aka The Bluestockings were one of the featured performers at Norwood High School’s “A Cappella Night” about a week ago. It’s seems that I am always in the dark at these events … trying to get the shot, waiting for their nose to come out from behind the microphone … with just a second I try to capture a smile, etc.
Sometime I succeed.
